27-year-old Jade Goody made headlines this year after exiting the reality show Bigg Boss to be treated for cervical cancer. In 98% cases the condition is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which are transmitted during sexual intercourse and live in the secretion under the male foreskin (so it is very rare in nuns and partners of circumcised men).
In India it is fast replacing breast cancer as the most common form of female cancer. 1.3 lakh Indian women develop it every year, and 74,000 die. Although the 33 to 55 age group are the most
vulnerable, younger women are being targeted.
You are in the danger zone if you
- became sexually active very early
- had/have multiple partners
- have a partner who had multiple partners
- have a partner whose expartner had cervical cancer
- had a succession of childbirths which wear ‘n’ tear the cervical tissue
- have a partner with a physically dirty job
- have perfunctionary genital hygiene, so the smegma of the male acts as a natural irritant or your partner have genital warts or herpes simplex
